Hastăyurvĕda is a treatise on elephants, Palkăpya wrote this Samhită. The present book is available as a complete Samhită, edited by Pandit Shivadutta Sharma. Hastăyurvĕda was printed at Anandăśrama press in 1894. Hastăyurvĕda has 160 Adhyăyăs. This Samhită is based on fundamental principles of Ayurvĕda, containing all aspects of Sharir including Anatomy & Physiology, Rog Vigyăna, Surgery and Treatment of elephants as well as their care. It is the one and only complete printed Samhită and rare book on Hastăyurvĕda by Palkăpya.

A Malayalam translation was also published by Mathrubhumi in 2006.

  1. Apart from Human healthcare, Ayurveda is there for Vriksha (Plants), Go (Gavaayurveda - Cow), Ashva (Horse) and Hasti (Elephant). These 3 animals are not only domesticated but also of great use to human beings. Cow for milk and Bull for agriculture and transportation; Horse for transportation and warfare; Elephant for transportation, construction and warfare. Thus the health and well being of these animals are of prime importance in those days.

  2. Probably this is because from time documented in our puranas, horses, elephants were used in warfare. (Unlike today when the elephants are maintained for festivals). Is there any mention of warfare in each of these branches of ayurveda?
