I have been thinking recently about our state of temples.

I have been thinking recently about our state of temples. They have changed their forms from being cultural and binding factors to just business centres. mostly people who are visiting the temples are doing mechanical things.

how can we revive the temples as discussion forums for arts, culture, social responsibilities from being just "transactional" in nature. there are satsangas being organized in the temples, but they just follow the bhakthi movement.

how can we revive usage of sanskrit, learning of vedas, and then to create a more responsible generation than ours?

ideas are welcome...

  1. Temples started as a shakti-peeTha (elevated energy centers) based on Tantra shaastra, Vaastu shaastra and also bhugarbavijnaana shastra. Later they gained significance as Treasuries, then as fine art centers and later as centers of cultural activities, later during the period of Bhakti movement became centers of worship and in 20th century became centers of prayers. (Earlier days we were only worshipers and we seldom used to pray - 99% of the slokas are only focusing on worshiping - the words like "Paahi, Paatu, Rakshatu, Avatu," etc. have deeper meanings seeking enlightenment and not worldly pleasures or worldly protection). So now with worldly prayers replacing the worship, the next logical progression (deterioration) is towards congregation, business, politics, etc.

  2. I see lot of people who are becoming Hindu flagship bearers, without even a slight idea about what it is. They think that unless they raise their voice Hinduism will perish. These kind of people never go beyond the cream of what Hinduism is meant to be. What a pity.

  5. It is important for everyone of us to read and study Bhagavadgita - but not as a school subject - how many will approach the studies with shraddhaa. Gita itself says not to offer it to those who don;t have shraddhaa.

  7. Rama Lakshmi Thanks for your suggestions. However this seems like a academic thing, which we are not sure about implementation. My inquiries is related to temples, how can we enrich in a systematic way.

Bhagavad Gita is a good and valuable suggestion. I think however there should be primary sanskrit education within temple walls first. There should be planned "parallel" education which was followed in a gurukulam.

once sanskrit roots have been established it is easy for teaching bhagavad gita/any other texts. we should go away with our dependency on english translation of our scriptures

  9. Why not each one of us. An ocean is constituted of large number of water droplets. If we do our bit like educating our children, known persons that is like small droplets which will make an ocean someday.

  14. god bless you Rama Lakshmi, these individual efforts should be combined in a systematic way like a web of small contributions. at the same time we should take this as an opportunity to "modernise" ourselves. we should understand that our ancestors lived in a world which cannot be compared with todays world. we need to think/reason well and adopt new changes which are necessary in this century. we should stop saying things like "if we just go back to what our ancestors were doing we would be happy". new schools of thinking has to revive around our traditional knowledge. we have to first understand the "eternal" knowledge of our vedas first, then others can follow. why vedas is eternal because it deals with personal experience, and it can never change. the things that change are how we interact with nature/surroundings etc. it is really the need of hour.

the next step would be to break our dependence on english for learning our culture. this seems like a difficult task, as we are still unsure about the damages done.

and lastly but not least, keep up your good work
