Namaskar, I was speaking with Sri Acharya Vamadeva Shastri via email and he informed me that he had just received the Padma Bushan award that day. It is truly wonderful to see his work being honored and recognition at this level, as he has devoted much of his life to India. His work regarding the Vedas is amongst the most important work regarding the Vedas of the modern age.  Jai Agni!

3 instruments in Spiritual Effort

3 instruments in Spiritual Effort         There are three instruments (Trikaranas) in the spiritual effort, which are mind (and intelligence), words and work.  The mind is transformed into work straightly and there is no need of words for transformation of one’s own mind into work.  Meera (a female Devotee) did not sing to convert her mind in to practice.  She sang for the sake of the world in the divine mission and not for her personal practice.  Similarly, Shankara ( a previous human incarnation) did not debate for His personal practice because He left the house (practice) even before the debates.  His debates were for the world only.  Therefore, the middle instrument (words) has no significance in your personal progress.   It is used for the sake of others only in the divine service of the Lord.  The word is a mixture of mind and work of body (throat).  The mixture is not the third component and only two components exist in it.  Hence, there are only two instruments.  One is externa

I have observed numerous attempts to correlate Jesus with various Vedic deities such as Mitra and Prajapati, as well as the Avatar of Vishnu--Krishna.  I thought I would submit this for consideration and discussion. http://originalpeople.org/bible-scholars-present-newly-ancient-confessions-proving-jesus-story/ http://originalpeople.org/bible-scholars-present-newly-ancient-confessions-proving-jesus-story

Advaita ("non-dualism") is often called a monistic system of thought.

Advaita ("non-dualism") is often called a monistic system of thought. The word "Advaita" essentially refers to the identity of the Self (Atman) and the Whole ( Brahman ). Advaita Vedanta says the one unchanging entity (Brahman) alone exists, and that changing entities do not have absolute existence, much as the ocean's waves have no existence in separation from the ocean. The key source texts for all schools of Vedānta are the Prasthanatrayam – the canonical texts consisting of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras. Adi Shankara was the first in the tradition to consolidate the siddhānta ("doctrine") of Advaita Vedanta. He wrote commentaries on the Prasthana Trayi. A famous quote from Vivekacūḍāmaṇi, one of his prakarana granthas that succinctly summarises his philosophy is: Brahma satyaṃ jagat mithyā, jīvo brahmaiva nāparah Brahman is the only truth, the spatio-temporal world is an illusion, and there is ultimately no difference betw

I have heard that the Manu Smriti mentions different treatment for different castes.

I have heard that the Manu Smriti mentions different treatment for different castes. Manu Smriti seems to be more of a code of social conduct. I want to know if there is any religious or Vedic permission to carry on caste based discriminations. What are the religious belief systems in today's Hindu society which encourage casteism? Reading Bhagavad Gita, Ashtavakra Gita and couple of Upanishads didn't help me find any such discriminations.. infact what i found was the opposite. Exclude social majoritarian dominance, politics and reservation system form discussion. Let the focus be on scriptures and religious customs.

The Rudras emanate out of Rudra (Shiva) and associate with a variety of tattvas.  One being forces in the mind, as an example Ahirbundya the serpent of the deep forms the foundation for the mind and can be an obstacle to the mind when within the ego and tapping its lowest manifestation within the mind.  We want Ahirbundaya to form a foundation based on living in dharma.  The Vedas specifically refers to this with Ahirbundaya and the Sindhu, which can be the ocean of the mind and the grah Rahu  (Rg Veda 5.3.8).  Note: Ahirbundaya is an ekadasa Rudra Avatar.  In the Vedic Zodiac, one can begin with a sign and count 8 signs and find a Rudra therefore the Rudras cover a variety of qualities and relationships with planets and the zodiac.  This is also transferred to the chakras as each chakra is associated with an element and various tattvas within the mind as well.  The Puranas/Upanishads provide different groupings as each grouping is a specific formula.  Certainly there would be an assoc

I have observed a backlash against the word 'Hindu' growing especially in the west, but in India as well.  While I understand the whole Sindhu river Persian reason for the word Hindu.  I don't find any compelling argument that anyone actually knows what the ancients called their religious beliefs, while I realize they practiced Dharma, I still see no compelling argument as to what the tradition really was called in ancient times.  Most 'ancient' terms appear to modern coming from the last few hundred years as adaptations against Hindu.  Is anyone aware of clarity presented in any of the authoritative texts?  Kindly do not waste everyone's time with the argument that others named us, as the word 'India' likewise came from the Greeks and Persians, as this is not my query.  In fact Bharata can be traced back to a king, so it is unclear as to the antiquity of even this term as far as referring to a geographical area.  I appreciate your insight and thoughts!

Please read this carefully, this could give some clues to - 1) why Indians are able to think differently, because many of us are bilinguals. 2). if we could think in Samskrit, how much beneficial that can be for understanding Sanatana dharma and our Samskriti. Many years ago, Ashwapati was the king of Madra desh ( Punjab ). He had several queens, but no children. He really wanted to have children. He was advancing in age. He decided that he will pray to Devi Savitri for children. He kept frequent fasts, and every day conducted havan in which he poured 100,000 scoops of ghee. If you are curious about this worship, read the Mahaa-nirvaana tantra. After eighteen years of steadfast worship, Devi Savitri manifested Herself from the havan fire. She said to him, “O king! Lord Brahma and I are pleased with you. You will soon have a resplendent daughter.” In time, queen Malavi gave birth to a daughter. They named her Savitri, in honor of the Devi. Savitri grew up to be beautiful young princess with bright shining eyes and rare intelligence. She studied a lot of Scriptures and developed a pious determination for life. She had a quiet nature, and the few words she spoke, were all very profound. People saw her as a Divine person, born only to be a great

Meaning of God said to be ‘Sat- Chit- Ananda’

Meaning of God said to be ‘Sat- Chit- Ananda’ The relative existence of the world is in the view of God only and not in the view of the soul God is said to be existence - awareness – bliss (Sat- Chit- Ananda). God is not awareness and this is established already. Even though God is not awareness, He knows due to His unimaginable nature. Bliss is intensive happiness and is the property of awareness only. When awareness itself ruled out, where is the place for its property? Still, you can say that God is happy due to His unimaginable nature. The word existence can be straightly accepted. God is the absolute existence and world exists relatively with respect to the absolute existence of God. When the rope is mistaken as snake, the existence of snake depends on the existence of rope only. Hence, the word Sat means the absolute existence. The relative existence of the snake is in the view of rope only and not in the view of snake. Therefore, the relative existence of the world is in the vi

In what scriptures do you find statements that women are not competent for knowledge and devotion?

In what scriptures do you find statements that women are not competent for knowledge and devotion? In the period of degradation, when the priests made the other castes incompetent for the study of the Vedas, they deprived the women also of all their rights. Otherwise you will find that in the Vedic or Upanishadic age Maitreyi, Gargi, and others ladies of revered memory have taken the places of rishis through their skill in discussing about Brahman. In an assembly of a thousand Brahmanas who were all erudite in the Vedas, Gargi boldly challenged Yajnabalka in a discussion about Brahman. Since such ideal women were entitled to spiritual knowledge, why shall not the women have the same privilege now? What has happened once can certainly happen again. History repeats itself. All nations have attained greatness by paying proper respect to women. That country and that nation which do not respect women have never become great, nor will ever be in future . The principal reason why your race ha

At a monastic retreat near Paris, in July of 1973, Śrīla Prabhupāda talked with Cardinal Jean Danielou: “... the Bible does not simply say, ‘Do not kill the human being.’ It says broadly, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’... why do you interpret this to suit your own convenience?” Śrīla Prabhupāda: Jesus Christ said, “Thou shalt not kill.” So why is it that the Christian people are engaged in animal killing? Cardinal Danielou: Certainly in Christianity it is forbidden to kill, but we believe that there is a difference between the life of a human being and the life of the beasts. The life of a human being is sacred because man is made in the image of God; therefore, to kill a human being is forbidden. Śrīla Prabhupāda: But the Bible does not simply say, “Do not kill the human being.” It says broadly, “Thou shalt not kill.” Cardinal Danielou: W

In this time of kali, which human incarnation is to be worshipped?   Suppose you have identified some human forms as incarnations.  Now the problem comes; who is the real human incarnation among these? Suppose you have worshipped all so that the risk of missing the real human incarnation is avoided.  Suppose you have taken one form and it may not be real human incarnation.  Even then, you need not be worried. Such human form may not be God but certainly he must be a very close devotee of God. Since your filtration is to such high level, the other forms must be exceptional devotees of the highest level.   Suppose you have taken such a strong devotee as human incarnation.  I assuredly tell you, that you are more lucky than the person who serves the real human incarnation. The reason is that God is more pleased if such strong devotee is worshipped, because God loves such strong devotee more than Himself. Therefore you will receive a better fruit in quicker time. Apart from this there is a
