This video would give us some idea about the Complex and intricate architectural wonder that is the Kailasha Temple (Cave 16) in Ellora caves. Ellora caves are structures excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills from Top down. The first set of Cave temples were created during 5th Century CE through 6th Century CE (1500 years back). This temple complex was built during the times of Kalachuri, Chalukya and Rashtrakoota dynasty in 3 generations spanning over 115 years !. Now this most of us knew. But what these things really mean in today’s context. Do we do such analysis and try to understand the depth on anything of antiquity? - read the analysis below

1). For more than 100 years and 3 generations, the Artisans were able to preserve and pass-on the designs. In today's terminologies - Blue prints and sketches, carried forward the original designs and also communicated the conceptual framework of the proposed temple's final look and feel precisely. The end product that you see in all grandeur when you visit Ellora.

2). Assume today you create a design in AutoCAD – the popular CAD software (running in a PC with Intel Core i5 CPU and Windows 8 Operating System), the drawing files are in .DWG (or) .IGS formats and the mathematical details are in Mathematica or MathCAD file formats. Now, it is to be noted that within the next 5-10 years, you yourself will forget the designs, concepts and details – it would take about 3 months of study to recollect and understand. Our ancestors could carry forward the designs and details for over 100 years.

3). In addition all the file formats and their compatibility will no longer be valid. The mediums like Tape, Hard disk, CD, etc. will also become obsolete and non-usable (E.g.: Today you can't even find a VCP/VCR to play your old movies which are in Tapes).

4). Just imagine how this much of details, of a complex 3 storey temple structure which is carved from Top down could have been done so precisely?. The architecture, structural engineering, sculpture designs, path ways, beams and columns, truss, and other detailing, etc. etc. were done so precisely, about 1500 years back?.

5). What technology we had before Muslim invasions ??, how much we really lost ??? - can you imagine. Ellora is just one of the many such Architectural wonders. We have 25 such intricate and complex architectural wonders still intact in India including Konark, Tanjavur Big Temple, Modhera sun temple, Rani ki Vaav step well, Halebid, Kajuraho, Prayag Fort, Puri Jagannath Temple, etc.

Now for the answers to the above questions of Technology etc...

6) “Vaastu shastra” is the answer. Vaastu a science of AECGPS (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Geology, Petrology and Sculpture). The beauty of this Vidyaa (education) is that mainly Artisans and Sculptors (called as Vishvakarma or Sthapathy) studied this wonderful science. They passed on this Science (or Arts ?) easily and eloquently over centuries till invasions and till the modern ugly constructions with Cement and Steel occupied the mainstream.

7). Vaastu Shastra, has 100s of treatises (published) including “Samarangana Sutradhaara”, “Devalayachandrika”, “Ganitakasaarakaumudi”, “Kaalatatvakosha”, “Rajavallabha”, “Vishvakarmaprakasha”, “Aparajitaprccha”, “Vaastusutropanishad”, etc. Though there are many published ones there are many more unpublished ones lying in our ORIs

8). In Kerala (kerala style) Vaastu shastra is taught as a Diploma in an institute in Aranmula for the past 20+ years. Over 1000 Churches, 3 Mosques and 1000+ other buildings have been built based on Vaastu shastra during the past 15+ years.

9). There are still 200+ undeciphered Manuscripts on Vaastu shaastra in ORIs as per National Manuscript Mission. There is nobody to study Sanskrit & manuscriptology and work on these manuscripts to publish these hidden treasures of Bharat. What secrets are hidden of this relatively unknown science. Vaastu shastra is the right choice particularly when we are looking for eco-friendly, cost-effective and longlife construction methods.

10). Vaastu shastra has techniques to use Sand, Clay, Bricks, Cow dung, Sap, Wood and Powdered wood as raw material for large constructions. Grand Temples, Forts and palaces were built in the past without Steel and cement and they are indeed the testimony to the great architectural heritage of Bharat. Only a well develped civilisation would have such evolved science.

11). Even in modern days the Vaastu expert Sri. Ganapathy sthapathy designed and built – Valluvar kottam in Chennai, Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari, 82 feet Buddha statue at Gaya, Iraivan Temple at Hawaii, etc. The Library that Sri. Ganapathy Sthapathy built has 3000 books on Vaastu shastra and Sthapathy vidyaa.

12). So for there are 6 distinct schools of Vaastu have been identified. i) North – Punjab, UP, Kashmir and ii). West – Gujarat, MP, Maharashtra and iii). East – Odisha, Bengal, and iv). South – Andhra, TN, Karanatka and v). South West – Kerala, Goa and vi). Far-East – Burma, Cambodia, Thailand. In all these schools the core principles remain the same.
