We all have heard the story of Lord Shiva in anger cutting the head of his son Lord Ganesha.

We all have heard the story of Lord Shiva in anger cutting the head of his son Lord Ganesha. I know this is just a story, but was eagerly searching for the source (in puranas). Can anyone shed light on this subject please?

  1. Not very sure whether it is part of Shiva purana or Brahmavaivarta purana - because references are there in both.

  2. The three oldest Ganesha temples are 1- Pillayarpatti - uttara Brahmi stone inscriptions are found here - and thus this is considered to be the oldest. 2. Thiruvalanchuzhi and 3. Kaanipakkam.
