Here is a sample of our message of the day from Yogi Baba Prem:

Within the 'Yoga Sutras of Patanjali', one of the niyamas is Svadhyaya. Sometimes this is translated as study. But in reality Svadhyaya is study of sacred texts, in particular the Vedas, chanting of the Vedas, and is sometimes used as a term to refer to the Vedas themselves.

This view is even referenced much later in history in the Puranas which state that 'those learned call the recital of Vedic passages 'Shatarudriya/Pranava (Shatarudriya refers to Vedic hymns but more commonly to specific Vedic hymns. These Vedic mantras are a means of purification. Pranava is a reference to a sacred sound such as 'OM') etc. which purify the incarnated being. This is Svadhyaya.' G. Purana 1.238.9

Adhyaya literally means a lesson, chapter or reading. Sva can be a reference to heavenly, but can also mean 'handed down as a sacred tradition'.

It is important for us to recognize that Patanjali was a Vedic rishi, and the yoga sutras were compiled from the Vedic tradition.

  2. This is a more complex area, as my understanding is that dating of the Puranas is somewhat unreliable. Just as the modern date of the Vedas given by most scholars is incorrect. With this Purana, this appears to be more difficult as they often contain information that is quite old and information that is more recent. Therefore when looking at people referenced, I often look and see if there is reference to a family history.

From what little knowledge regarding this Purana that I have, it is more concerning regarding outside influences. The style of writing changes at times, and there are subjects that don't really follow with tradition, or this Purana is used by other traditions to promote their agenda. Which makes me suspicious that other cultures and teachings may have influenced or were introduced into this purana. This is the primary reason that I have chosen to not focus much on this Purana. While I recognize this is unsettling to some people, I feel it is better to be honest, though certainly this Purana does have information from the tradition as well.

  3. पुराण - पुरा अपि नवम् (both old and new) - puranas talk of both old and new - both past and future (but not current). इतिहास - इति इह आस happened like this (or) इति ह आस happened indeed (mostly talks of the current - Ramayana happened during the time of Sage Valmiki - thus current and Mahabharata happened during the time of Sage Vyasa - thus current). Thus Purana is not historical treatise where as Itihaasa is historical. In Puranas there are lots of superlative, relative, narrative Similes. It is not the history that is important but the Tatva (the message) that is important - we should not take it verbatim in anything even including from shastras, more so from Puranas. Shastra itself says - यस्य नास्ति स्वयं प्रज्ञा शास्त्रं तस्य किं करोति  - means if one doesn't have his own Vivekha, then what is the use of shastra - he /she can understand /apply shastra in a wrong way. So Bhavishya Purana shouldn't be taken as it is. Patanjali mentioned there could be the same person or not
