Dreams....

We know dviata , advaita ..but we also know there's something called visista advaita which is difficult to comprehend.
Existence of dvaita and advaita at the same time.

There's an apology which I generally think while thinking of dvaita and advaita. Tell me where does vishita advaita fit in in this analogy.

Let's say you are dreaming of few characters in your sleep. Now the character in dream doesn't know that he's being dreamed.
That's the plane where we all live. Vishnu dreams of this universe but we all think that there is a separate entity or dvaita.
Yogis who realised god are the ones who know that they are being dreamed. And the moment he realizes he doesn't care about this world coz he understood that this is all maaya. That's why we see no person like Ramana maharshi , ramakrisna paramahamsa who have never gone back to material world. He just shuns his interests in the material world.
Untill now I had this example to explain my friends when they want to understand dvaita and advaita

But how do I explain vishita advaita ??
You have a good analogy ??
Or can we tweak the above analogy to understand all 3 ??

  1. With my limited knowledge in Advaita God is nirguna parabrahmam, whereas in Vishishta Advaita (Ramanujar) God is saguna parabrahmam.

    Unlike Advaita where it is said "Aham Brahmasmi", there is no reality beyond God. Even if one realize or not.

    The state of Advaita is mainly defined by Maya. The term maya does not denote that one which is not there. Kanchi Mahaperiyava in his Deivathin Kural gives a beautiful example to understand Maya. In night if one steps on a flower garland and thinks it as snake. The body immediately reacts as if its a snake even though the reality is only a garland.

    Another example is a carpenter taking his son to his workshop where there is a huge sculpture of wooden elephant. By seeing the wooden elephant the son is scared, but the sculptor is not.

    This is primary principle in Advaita.

  2. I am thinking that Ramanajur was infact dvaita. Well from my understanding.. these are the states of your realisation. Dvaita eventually leads to advaita so does any other philosophies.
    Dvaita or advaita are not about the description of God as such. You start doing rituals thinking you are different and God is different. When your bhaki eventually ripens you are in a state of becoming of that oneness. There's never a rishi who never did a tapasya and got moksha. If he thinks everything is one(advaita) for whom he has to do tapasya for. So you go from a state of dualness to oneness.
    It's like a transition.
    You and I know advaita but deep down that realisation hasn't come yet. Else we wouldn't be talking here. We are still in dvaita state of mind.
    Of course as u say Abt Maya, yes you are right. It doesn't mean it's not there , it's there. It's like the reflection of God head in a mirror. What we see in mirror is true but still it's not the actual thing :)

  3. Well true. We are all learning the philosophies taught by these giants. We are still not even dwaita. we still think material world is the real one, just like the example of snake in garland. We are still in the shock of stepping on a snake. We still think our mind is our soul. When our scriptures say atma does not die, we still think how.

    Only when we reach to this level of "being", rather than speculating it the real difference will be known.

    We are still like the water droplets sprinkled from ocean waves certainly knowing that we will hit the ocean soon [die soon]; adamantly thinking we are separate than the ocean. We have an existence without the ocean.
