Personally, I had witnessed many final exams which are part of the "Vaakyaartha sabhaa" conducted by both Kanchi maTham as well as Sringeri maTham - the gaNapaty Vaakyaartha sabhaa is quite famous (search for videos in YouTube).
The kind of rigor in these exams are unimaginable to the Western trained minds - worth witnessing at least once, just to know what it is. I am fortunate to study under one such Acharya who is a teacher to such students and also befriend with another couple of Acharyas. I am planning to collect some funds for such paaThashaalaas. Anyone interested can either directly contribute directly to Sri. Anjaneya Sharma Garu or other such paaThashaala or contact me.
There is also another old paaThashaala in Rajamandri. Veda Bhavan in Secunderabad is slowly maturing into another one. In olden days every single Veda PaaThashaalaa was also a shastra paaThashaala but now due to lack of students and lack of teachers they have abandoned shastra teachings. Yet still there some bright ones.
Also Indians are to blame, because we are not interested in Veda/ Shastra but only Puranas even the so called intellectuals don't have any ideas about our Veda shastra parampara. The Puranas that we are reading or watching in TV, etc. are with so much of regional /linguistic variations /corruptions /interpolations and over time have become totally different from the originals. (E.g.: There is some version of corrupted view in Bihar which is recently propagated is that the Yadavs are not descendants of King Yadu but of some Asura, etc. ).
Shastra study is meant for people who use rational inquiry into the Dharma and the Ultimate to achieve higher consciousness.
