What is the actual status of Sanskrit speakers in India? Is their number increasing or dwindling?
ReplyDeleteread my blog for the exact numbers of Sanskrit speakers - http://sanskritlinguistics.blogspot.in/2014/05/national-sanskrit-tv-channel.html
ReplyDeleteCurrently about 45 million people can speak Sanskrit - this is more than the population in many European countries. Cleverly the news reports only people with Sanskrit as mother tongue - even that has increased from 15,000 to 50,000+
ReplyDeleteElementary sanskrit is studied by many students in schools but because of its less use as a communication medium pushes sanskrit backwards.
ReplyDeleteThe DD Sanskrit initiative can be a great booster as it will open some employment opportunities and spread awareness as well.
Wonderful!
