Was shakuni of mahabharat one eyed or one and a half eyed man?
Was shakuni of mahabharat one eyed or one and a half eyed man? Is anything mentioned in mahabharat about his physical appearance... did he limp?
Thanks.

Yes.
ReplyDeletehe was maimed by his own father to take revenge for his family. His whole family sufferred in the Hasthinapura Prison. They were prisoned by Bhishma Pithamaha. All of them were sparsely fed with one grain of rice each per day and Shakuni's father decided Shakuni, the most cunning of them all could survive and fed all the rice to Shakuni, so that he could live on to take revenge. Yes, he limped. :)))))
ReplyDeleteBut what about his eyes? Were they defective?

I think the above story does not figure in mahabarath. It was an addendum done later in other versions of mahabarath.
ReplyDeletehe was having good eye sight. he was limping
Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for krishnamurthi and Ananta ji to reply.
There were no problems for Shakuni (the word shakunam means oman - Shakunam asya asti iti Shakuni ) means the one who can see the shakunams (omans) Birds are also shakunis. He was the king of Gandhara - discribed in the first chapter of Bhagavadgita, as well as in Dhyana slokas - if he was kaaNa (partial blind) or Andha (total blind) - he couldn't have taken part in the war. - This was the yuddha dharma, so he was alright.
ReplyDeleteKrishnamurthi CG it means as he participated in the war, he was physically fit. He didn't even limp?
ReplyDeleteNot sure Sunil Yadav, I dont care about such details... There are lot of other things to be learned from our ithihasa/puranas... these details hardly come to my notice... sorry I could not answer...
ReplyDeleteAnantha Narayanan you are right but someone else asked me the same after seeing such features in the mahabharat serial on star plus.
ReplyDeletelimping doesn't mean one is not fit or handicapped. Shakuni was fit and in good health else he can't run a country as well as he can't participate in war.
ReplyDeleteKrishnamurthi CG your last point makes sense. there were war rules at the times of Mahabharata which would have clearly said as to who can fight, if there were any physical deformities they would be disallowed to fight. But is there any instance where Dhrthrasthra had fought any wards?
ReplyDeleteshakuni means a kind of bird 'vulture'. But here in mahabharatha shakuni is maternal uncle of duryodana; son of subala, the king of gandhaara. He was born out of dwaaparamsha (mahabarath adi 68 );he had two brothers vrushaka, brihadbala (MB adi 201);he had many cousins too..( (drona parva 30,158, ;bhima parva 90, )11 sisters all married to dritarashtra (..adi 119;)he fought war on 14 th day of mahabarath, lost to nakula and sahadeva ;16th day with sruthasoma son of bhimasena and lost; 17 th day with bhimasena ...lost, 18 th day with sahadeva and died (shalya parva 27).
ReplyDeleteToday we use this name to identify old wicked minded humans.,whose counsel tend to ruin.
There are no instances I could find that dritharaashtra fought any wars.
