ReplyDeleteऋतुः (Ritu) meaning seasons - this is a word derived from the verb root "ऋ" - गतौ (जुहोत्यादि-गणः = the Verb root belongs to a group starting with the verb जुहोति)
From this particular verb root many words are derived such as "ऋत" (used widely in Vedas and means cosmic cyclical order). Also "शृङ्गार" (the chief "Rasa" among Nava-rasa).
The word ऋतु means seasons and the rest of 6 words are names of the seasons. Each one of these names are derived based on the charecteristics of that particular season. E.g.: ग्रीष्म - stands for summer. How this word is derived = "ग्रसते रसान् इति ग्रीष्म" (ग्रस्+मनिन् - उणादि) = meaning that (season) which sucks away the juice /water (due to heat). Like this each one of the season name signifies the characteristics of that season.
Note: We have 6 seasons (each 2 months long) and Europeans have 4 seasons (each 3 months long) - why? = because the closer you're to the equator you'll have more seasons and in the polar regions there are only 2 seasons - summer and winter (each 6 months long).
If you want the derivation of each one of the names of the 6 seasons - let me know...
ReplyDeleteYes, please. I would like to know that as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. I will need some more time to understand in full.
Just amazed to see how scientific Samskrit Bhasha is, where each and every word has reason for it's constituent sounds. And also it reminded how beautifully God has placed India geographically which is neither too close to equater nor too far having everything from sea, deserts and mountains all in one place and that too both hot (as Rajasthan) and cold (laddakh) deserts, so that anyone can enjoy gifts of nature at the fullest in this amazing piece of land. No wonder why it was rich in agriculture technology and sprituality. And hats off to our ancient Rishi's who dated our festivals so scientifically, other culture may assign any date randomly but when we celebrate a day it has significant astronomic, geophysical and biological reasons. The terminologies associated them has also perfect logic attached with.
