ReplyDeleteMeaning of NIRUKTA is "one who is not able to give answer". I welcome other comments.
ReplyDeleteSheshachaliah N Is it a part of Veda in the six parts of Veda?
ReplyDeleteYes Nirukta is part of Vedanga. To understand Veda one must learn Siksha, Vyakaranam, Chandas, Nirukta, Jyotisha, and Kalpa. (This is mentioned in Mandukya Upanishad)
ReplyDeleteAnantha Narayanan Tnx 2 reply.☺
ReplyDeleteI would like to know, why that part of holy knowledge is named such if there is any answer in short for being called 'not able to give answer'.
ReplyDeleteAs per some websites it is mentioned that it was yaskacharya who elaborated on nirukta. previous to his times it was considered difficult.
ReplyDeleteancientindians.in - Nirukta (Etymyology) : Learning Vedic Sanskrit
Nirukt is also identified as ears of Vedas.
ReplyDelete1. Part of Vedanga (Veda and Vedanga are to be studied together. 6 Vedanga are - shiksha, chandas, nirukta, vyakarana, kalpa, jyotisha)
ReplyDelete2. Part of the triads (i) Svarupa samrakshana (shiksha & chandas); (ii) Artha samrakshana (nirukta & vyakarana), (iii) Acharana-samrakshana (kalpa & jyotisha) of Veda
3. Nirukta - the word means elaborated, explained, interpreted, etc. (this is the oldest of the "Nirvacana" - tradition (nirvacana means eloboration /explanation)
4. Vedanga Nirukta in "Kali-yuga" is written by Acharya Yaska and Durga-acharya has done the commentary
5. Many words - for which the "vyutpatti" were lost can be found in "Nirukta".
6. Nirukta has to be studied after one studies "Vyakarana" (Sri Yaskaacharya himself says Vyakarana is the most important among all the 6 Vedanga)
7. Sri. Panini referred about Nirukta /Yaskaacharya in Ashtadyayi - thus the text is older than Ashtadyayi
Krishnamurthi CG Thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteThere is lot of interest in people in my circles to study parayana. But nobody know what a formal education system used to be.
ReplyDeleteWill it be possible for you to explain what a pupil of veda paatashaala is supposed to learn and in what order?
