What is the significance of Udgeetaa?

In what different contexts is it used in the Vedas?

Thank you!

  1. I am not sure of what you are referring. There is a term called Utgaataa - this means a Saamavedi at the end of Vedic ceremony (Yajna) - this means after poornaahuti will sing Saama gaanam (the same Vedic manta in a very special way). This is to invite Devataas and to request them to accept the offerings what ever that is given to Agni. In any Vedic Yajna there are 4 types of Ritvik - 1). Hota (Rig vedi) who does the offerings, 2). Adhvaryu (Yajur vedi) who takes care of the Krama, 3). Utgaataa (Saama vedi) who invites devataad through his singing of veda mantras, and 4). Brahmaa (Atharva vedi) who overseas everything. In North India except may be Varanasi and Ujjain I haven't heard Yajnas taking place, mostly Havanas /Homas - both are very different. In South in Kerala and Tamilnadu Yajnas are performed. Except a few like Putra kaama, Rajasooya - rest are all performed for Wellbeing of Mankind - on the otherhand Havanas are mostly to fulfill desires. You need Srautaas to do Yajna and not Smaartas. Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shaakta, etc. are Smaartaas basically. Srautaas are Sun /Fire worshippers and many are Agnohotries (I didn't mean the surname holders here - there are many people with a surname Agnihotri but they don't know anything about Agnihotra nor they got any agnitryaadhaanam).

  2. i got it here:
Now, verily, that which is the Udgitha is the Pranava; that which is the Pranava is the Udgitha. Yonder sun is the Udgitha. It is the Pranava, because it moves along uttering Om.

Sama Veda, Chandogya Upanishad I, V - Meditation on Om as the Sun and the Prana, 1

Now, verily, that which is the Udgitha is the Pranava; that which is the Pranava is the Udgitha. He (i.e. the udgatri priest) who knows this, rectifies from the seat of the hotri priest any mistake committed by him (the udgatri priest), yea he rectifiesit.

Sama Veda, Chandogya Upanishad I, V - Meditation on Om as the Sun and the Prana, 5

  3. Your explanation is apt. The term उद्गीता refers to Saama gana method of chanting the प्रणवमन्त्रः or Om (a-u-m as a single syllable in 3 maatraa kaala) to invoke Sun - सविता (सवितृ (stem)- Sun) This means the उद्गाता (उद्गातृ (stem) - saama vedi) recites Om in a special way. This is not to correct any mistakes but as I said invite the Sun to accept the offerings - after पूर्णाहुतिः. Since छान्दोग्योपनिषद् is also part of Saama veda - this is propounded in that.
