The Legend of Shiva
The Legend of Shiva
There is a legend among yogis (meditators) in the Himalayas. It is about an ancient ancient ancient man named Shiva. He was sort of like a Buddha of the past who was determined to find a way of of the material matrix, if you will. So, he meditated intensely (tapas, in Sanskrit) until he found the path to liberation and immortality, beyond time and space. And, according to this one specific path, these yogis say that all avatars that help human kind in some way are "emanations" of Shiva. Shiva, in this belief system, did not create the universe - it is self-existent. Rather, within the universe, he found a paradise, a shangri-la if you will, where you are forever free, at peace and ever blissful, here within the universe, but again, beyond its parameters of time and space. The Sacred Syllable OM - also spelled AUM - culminates symbolically in the deity of Shiva, as M stands for Maha-Isvara (The Great Lord). Shiva is not a destroyer like many say,. Rather, he is a destroyer of illusion and the power that illusion and ignorance has over our lives. Great story. Om Namah Shivaya.

ReplyDeleteYes, there is also a story that Vishnu and Brahma were discussing who was the greatest and a mighty lingam appeared. Brahma and Vishnu searched high and low but could find no beginning or end to the lingam. The story goes on to say that Brahma and Vishnu were born out of the sides of Shiva.--Shiva Purana
