Gorakshakah become Gorakha (Gorakhpur) and a community - Gorkhas. Go means both Cow and Veda. Thus Gorakshaka /Gopala is both protector of Cow and Vedas. The first mantra in Yajurveda is about Cow and Calfs. Now how to do Veda Samrakshanam. Veda samrakshanam doesn't happen by talking about it - even in the absense of a protector Vedas survived - how it was residing the tongues, minds of people - the best way to protect. However Vedic Rishis have deviced 3 kinds of protection and they created 6 tools for that - they are called Vedangaani (Veda angas). For svaroopa samrakshnam (the form as it is) - Shiksha shastram and Chandas shastram; For artha samrakshanam (meanings and their interpretations) - Nirukta shastram and Vyakarana shastram; For karma /aacharana samrakshanam (to do karma as per veda or live as per the instructions of Veda) - Kalpa Shastram and Jyotisha shastram. Here Kalpa is devided into 3 - Grihya, Shulbha, Dharma. Grihya deals with the individual's Varna-Ashrama dharma with respect to him /his home. Shulbha deals with Yagna /Yaga related krama. Dharma deals with social rules and regulations - Manu, Parasara, etc. are for society related. Jyotisha primarily for starting 3 important activities in the right time - Yagna, Agriculture and Construction based on celestal positions (astronomy) - jyotisha shastra is not for predicting one's future etc. (that is a separate area called as Phalita Jyotisha or predictive astrology). Of all the shastras the first that needs to be studied is Vyakarana as per Vedic Rishis as enumerated by Yaskacharya - Pre-Panini maharishi Nirukta shastragna.
